Cookware for Gas, Induction and Electric Stoves in Rwanda

Before you buy pots and pans, check which stove you cook on. Not all cookware works on every stove, and the wrong choice can waste money.

Gas stoves

Almost all cookware works on gas: aluminium, granite-coated, non-stick, stainless steel and cast iron. Choose pots with thick bases so food does not burn, and handles that stay cool.

Induction stoves

Induction only works with magnetic cookware. Stainless steel and cast iron usually work; plain aluminium does not. Look for "induction compatible" in the description. A quick test: if a magnet sticks to the bottom of the pot, it will work on induction.

Electric stoves

Flat-bottomed pots work best, because they touch the hot plate fully. Stainless steel, cast iron and heavy granite cookware are good choices.

Which material to choose?

  • Granite and non-stick: easy to clean, needs less oil. Use wooden or silicone utensils.
  • Stainless steel: lasts for years and works on all stoves.
  • Cast iron: holds heat very well. Ideal for slow cooking.
  • Pressure cookers: save time and gas when cooking beans.
