How to Choose a Dinner Set: Ceramic, Porcelain or Opal Glass?

A dinner set is one of the most important things you will buy for your home, and one of the most popular gifts in Kigali. Here is how to choose the right one.

1. Choose the material

  • Porcelain: fine, light and elegant. Ideal for visitors and special occasions.
  • Ceramic and stoneware: thicker and sturdy, with beautiful glazes and colours. Great for everyday family meals.
  • Opal glass: light, hard-wearing and resistant to chipping. A practical choice for busy homes with children.

2. Choose the size

  • 12 pieces: usually for 4 people. Good for a couple or small family.
  • 16 pieces: a bit more room for guests.
  • 24 pieces or more: for 6 or more people, or families who host often.

Think about how many people eat at home on a busy day, then add two or three for visitors.

3. Check what is included

Count the dinner plates, side plates, bowls and soup plates. A family that eats a lot of rice and stew may want deeper plates or extra bowls.

4. Think about care

Check whether the set is microwave and dishwasher safe. Gold-rimmed pieces look beautiful but are best washed by hand.
